It is a very special experience to observe dolphins in their natural habitat. The waters around the Island of Pico are rich feeding grounds for the dolphins and is know as one of the Top Sport for Dolphin observation in the world. The animals hunt on Snipe fish, Bastard mackerels and Sardines. 5 dolphin species meet here in summer. While the speedy striped dolphins are always very busy and less interested in snorkling you can snorkel well with the other 4 species, the Bottlenose dolphins, Spotted dolphins, Risso´s dolphins and Common dolphins Pico is one of the best places in the world for sustained underwater viewing of these friendly marine mammals.

Sustainable treatment of the animals is our top priority. Therefore, the experienced skippers also read the behavior of the animals first and decide when or if you are allowed into the water.

With the help of the experienced skippers you can observe the behavior of the dolphins in peace and learn a lot about their life and migration cycles.

Operating since 1993 we have 30 years of experience with marine mammals. Our skippers work with us since many years and lots of experience in gentle handling of the animals. We find the whales and dolphins because we work with land based spotters. This technique dates back to the days of the old whalers. With strong binoculars the so called VIGIA searches for the whales and dolphins. They tell the boats the positions of the animals. Thus, we never go blindly to the ocean and work with a 99% success rate in sightings.

For an ideal preparation our well-trained guides will give a short briefing before the departure. It is regulated by law that a maximum of two persons at the same time will be allowed to be in the water with the dolphins. The dolphins are not always in the mood to stay with the group so we usually take the time to observe them from the boat and then attempt to approach them. On some excursions the animals can only be watched from the boat. As soon as we notice that the group is travelling with pups or we feel that the dolphins are disturbed and do not want to have contact with us, we respect this. Adding the weather conditions which are not always stable we recommend to book several excursions. Please also bear in mind that you might need some time to get used to the ocean which can be up to 3,000 meters deep below you.

Swimming with Dolphins is one of the most emotional things you can do in your life. You will be visiting these amazing animals in the open water, in their natural habitat. It is advisable to bring your own snorkelling equipment, however we do provide it if you don’t have any. In accordance with sustainable nature observation, swimming around without equipment is not permitted, as we want to disturb the animals as little as possible.

Please bear in mind that you should have an average physical condition to snorkel with dolphins in the open water. If not, please do not hesitate to contact us before booking to discuss this.

Before you plan to fulfill your dream, it should be clear that you visit the animals in the open water. Therefore you should be a good swimmer and be able to handle mask, snorkel and fins. The chances of a closer interaction with the dolphins are higher if you are able to plunge a few meters into the blue of the Atlantic, due to the natural curiosity of these animals, the interest of the dolphins increases. In order to prepare as perfectly as possible we recommend a snorkelling course for beginners which we regularly offer and which can be booked in advance.
