Pico Sport 2021 – the ProNature fleet

Pico Sport offers exclusive diving cruises in the Azores on 4 small luxury yachts. Since the season in the Azores is only 4 months long, it is not worth using a large diving cruise ship in this area as is known from Egypt or the Maldives. We rely on small yachts with microgroups of divers on board, which we take to the very best places in the archipelago. We dive at anchor or as a drift dive in deep blue. Therefore, this cruise is not intended for beginners, but divers who have the experience to deal with currents, depths and large marine animals.

Weekly programs are available from Pico / Faial as well as the new program around the island of Santa Maria. We are on our way to see the big animals of the Atlantic and the crew is constantly trying to head for the best possible areas with a look at the weather map.

For all boats, we usually spend the night in ports. Exceptions are the overnight stays outside on the Princess Alice Bank or the night with the Formigas on the Santa Maria tours. The overnight stays there make it possible to dive at these spectacular places at all times of the day, to take advantage of the tide changes and the special morning and evening hours. In Santa Maria in particular we can stay with the whale sharks for hours and drift with the animals in the blue whale. When we spend the nights in the marinas, the guests leave the ship to eat ashore. That is why evening meals are only planned and included for nights at sea.

The boats and cruises are intended for all those who do not want to sit hourly on uncomfortable inflatable boats to reach the top sport and those who want to stay at the top places to dive there at the best times.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Check-In from 17:00pm

We meet in the Harbour of Madalena in front of the Pico Sport Base. We will check you into your booked cabin and you will receive a first briefing for the upcoming days onboard our cruise Ship. In the evening you will leave the boat and have dinner in a local restaurant in Madalena.

Day 2 – 7: Divecruise

In the upcoming days we are heading to the most beautiful dive spots of the central group of the Azores. As highlights we will visit the Mobula Rays at Princess Alice Bank and the Blue sharks in the waters off Pico Island and Faial.

Program during the Cruise: 2-3 dives per day

Day 8: Check-out at 10:00am

Our boat arrives at the Harbour of Madalena do Pico from there we will organise transfers to Pico or Horta airport. And for the people beginning their subsequent holidays we offer accommodation, car or scooter rentals and other island activities.

The Narobla will be given a general overhaul in winter 2020. Engines are removed and overhauled. The Seats are reupholstered and the cabins reupholstered and furnished.

A new black water system will be installed for this purpose, etc.

Olim

The Olim is a VZ 45 and therefore shorter than the other two ships. But it is a bit wider and offers a lot of space on board. The beautiful ship is powered by 2 caterpillar motors with 450 hp each. That makes the Olim a fast ship. We can reach Princess Alice within 3 hours.

The Olim is an ideal charter boat for small groups. Ideally there are 4 professional divers on board who can use this ship to dive the top spots according to your mood and qualifications.

The charter offers absolute flexibility and quality. However, the ship can also be booked individually.

Blue Bay

The Blue Bay is a bay liner 49 ft. This old lady has been overhauled by us and is the ideal ship to visit the diving areas around Santa Maria. The two 350 hp Hino turbodiesels transport guests safely and comfortably to their destination. This ship is not a racing boat but is used where the dive sites are not far apart.

Notes

The route plan is weather dependent.

Please note that limited space is available on board. Diving bags and luggage are stored during the cruise on land in our base in Madalena.

Please note that therefore an order discipline must be observed. The equipment must be stowed in the mounts and storage bays after the dives and can not lie around.

The boat is big enough to make yourself comfortable. The flight bridge offers the guests a lot of space as well as the front deck area.

Camera equipment must always be stowed well in order not to be damaged by sudden waves.

It is important to inform us in a timely manner that we can adapt to all needs.

The boat has a maximum of 3 crew members who are always ready to fulfill all the wishes of the guests. However, be aware that this is not a dive ship with more service staff than guests. This means that a helping hand is quite welcome here and there, such as on sailing trips.

Still an open word for the expectations of the divers:

In the foreground are the dives at the Princess Alice Bank where we plan an overnight stay and want to do up to 6 dives. Even the shark dives with blue sharks are an absolute highlight. Due to the weather it may be that these dives are at the beginning of the trip. When we dive into the Marine Parks in the second part of the cruise, the big encounters are no longer to be expected but we are dealing with the typical creatures of the Atlantic. There is a lot to offer, but some people are disappointed if Manta, Mobula and Blue Shark are not seen on every dive.

Furthermore, we dive in the mid-Atlantic. This means that we have to reckon with currents offshore. We are prepared for this, but we ask our guests to incorporate this into the expectation.

The water temperature at the drop offs varies from 16 degrees to 23 degrees.

Whales and dolphins can also be seen. On the high seas we might be able to observe these animals from the boat.
